The geomagnetic activity index Kp is widely used but restricted by low time resolution (3-hourly) and an upper limit. To address this, new indices, Hpo, are introduced. Similar to Kp, Hpo expresses the level of planetary in units thirds (0o, 0+, 1−, 1o, 1+, 2−, …) based on magnitude disturbances observed at subauroral observatories. has a higher than Kp. 30-min (Hp30) 60-min (Hp60) indices produced. frequency distribution designed be similar that so may as time-resolution alternative Unlike which capped 9o, open-ended thus can characterize severe storms more accurately.
